Note Taking - Note Making

Note taking and note making are two different systems. Note TAKING is more of a structured guide for what a person or subject is talking about. The most common kind of note taking is simply jotting down material that is being stated in class. Note MAKING is more informal, and leans towards what the note taker thinks about a subject and / or needs to learn about a subject. Note making usually starts first. It is the researcher's personal notes; it is more of a brainstorm of ideas.
With this being said, I feel that my note taking skills are a mixture of both. This is actually not a good thing. Almost every time I have to copy notes on paper, I tend to jot extra information out to the side that I may need further help with and / or possible questions I have on that topic. The problem with this is that I get distracted very easily, and as soon as I start writing out to the side of my paper I begin to think of even more questions and off topic notes. This results in missed information from the teacher as well as random lines of graffiti collaged on my page. ADD? ADHD? I do not think so.  I want to write everything that the teacher says, yet I do not want to lose my extra thoughts and questions. I am sure this happens to several students, and this can not mean we all have some kind of disease or disorder. There has got to be a different way of receiving information for a test then note taking and note making.

Is it bad for a teacher to give a student specific notes they will need for a test?

Is it bad that I am 23 years old, and I still struggle with keeping good notes?!

  1. Hi Kari, you're not the only one that struggles to take good notes, I assure you. Quick point of clarification though, notemaking, as F/F describe it, refers to making notes from a text, whereas, notetaking refers to taking notes from a lecture. I don't really like that differentiation, but it's thought-provoking. Dr B
